Why Discovering Your Soul’s Purpose is Challenging – And How to Overcome It

Have you ever struggled to live in alignment with your soul’s purpose? If so, you’re not alone. One of the most significant obstacles is the fear of judgment from others and the pressure to conform to societal expectations. Here’s a deeper look into why these fears arise and how you can move past them to live a more fulfilling life.

The Fear of Judgment and the “Shoulds”

Many people struggle with discovering their soul’s purpose because they fear judgment from others. This fear is often rooted in the societal “shoulds” – the idea that you should live your life a certain way to be accepted and approved by others.

As a trauma-informed nutritionist and recovery coach who has worked with hundreds of clients, I’ve seen firsthand how these fears can hold people back. My mission is to help individuals uncover what makes them excited to jump out of bed in the morning and turn their passions into a thriving, profitable business.

For example, I recently spoke with a client who passionately shared her dreams. Suddenly, she began critiquing herself, listing reasons why she wasn't good enough, such as:

  • Others having more experience.

  • Fears that others could do it better.

  • Struggles with letting go of perfection.

  • Doubts about her worthiness.

I stopped her and asked why she judged herself so harshly. It became clear that her strong desire to fit in during her youth had driven her to conform to the status quo.

Why We Judge Ourselves

Desire for Approval: Many of us seek approval to feel accepted and lovable. This need can prevent us from discovering and living our soul’s purpose. However, true acceptance comes from showing your unique self to the world. You’ll attract the right people by being authentic.

Belief in a Single “Right” Way: You might have been taught that there’s only one correct way to do things. This mindset can stem from harsh judgments received as a child. It’s crucial to understand that there is no single right way. Embrace the idea that any effort is a positive step forward.

Self-Criticism as Growth: Some believe that being self-critical will lead to growth. In reality, criticism often hinders progress. Positive reinforcement and understanding that making mistakes is part of learning can be much more motivating.

Fear of Change: Fear of change can make discovering your soul’s purpose difficult. Change is inevitable and constant. Embrace it as a natural part of life and an opportunity for growth.

Prioritizing Others' Happiness: Many people, especially those from traumatic backgrounds, focus on making others happy at their own expense. It’s essential to recognize that you deserve to pursue your dreams. When you are fulfilled, those around you are more likely to be fulfilled as well.

Fear of Discomforting Others: You might fear that pursuing your dreams will make others uncomfortable. However, your passion and dedication can inspire those around you. It’s important to prioritize your own fulfillment.

Steps to Overcome These Obstacles

  1. Acknowledge Your Fears: Recognize that it’s normal to have these fears and that many people experience them.

  2. Reflect on Your Experiences: Understand the root causes of your fears to address them more effectively.

  3. Set Realistic Expectations: Manage your expectations and understand that success does not require perfection.

  4. Build a Support System: Surround yourself with people who support your growth and understand your journey.

  5. Communicate Openly: Share your goals and fears with loved ones and encourage them to share their perspectives.

  6. Embrace Change: Accept that change is a natural and necessary part of growth.

  7. Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small.

  8. Seek Professional Help: If needed, consider seeking help from a therapist or counselor to manage your anxieties effectively.

Embracing Your Unique Path

Discovering and living your soul’s purpose is a journey that requires courage and self-acceptance. By addressing your fears and taking proactive steps, you can live a more fulfilling life that aligns with your true self. Remember, success and meaningful relationships are not mutually exclusive. With the right mindset and support, you can achieve your dreams and inspire those around you. Embrace your unique path and let your true self shine.
